The world of market research is built on a simple premise: ask questions, get answers, and make better business decisions. However, the middle part of that equation, the “getting answers” phase known as fieldwork, is rarely simple.
Fieldwork often seems simple at the start: you line up your sample, plan the locations, and set expectations. But just a few days in, reality hits. Respondents aren’t home, enumerators misinterpret questions, phones die mid-interview, roads are worse than expected, and suspicion from participants grows. Hitting your sample size becomes a scramble, staff are stretched thin, and data quality, almost imperceptibly at first, starts to slip.
This is normal.
Fieldwork barriers exist in every country, every sector, and every type of study. Enumerators Are Human (Even When We Forget That)
Enumerators are not robots. They don’t press a button and produce clean data.
They interpret questions. They read body language. They decide whether to probe or move on. All of that affects your data, whether you like it or not.
When training is weak, enumerators fall back on whatever feels easiest at the moment.

- Rephrase questions “to help the respondent”
- Skip awkward or sensitive questions
- Rush interviews by leading respondents to the answers instead of letting them think, so they can meet targets

- Beg respondents who refuse to be interviewed
None of this happens because enumerators are careless. It happens because they are human. They are under pressure. They just want to get the fieldwork done.

Good training focuses on understanding, not memorization.
- Explain why each question exists. People behave better when they understand the purpose.
- Practice real interviews among enumerators before the pilot.
- Talk openly about difficult situations and how to handle them.
- Make it clear that quality matters more than speed.

Running Out of Sample: The Fieldwork Problem Nobody Likes to Admit
Running out of samples is one of those problems teams whisper about, not something they openly plan for. On paper, the sample looks achievable. The target population exists. Everyone signs off. Then fieldwork starts, and slowly, quietly, the sample begins to dry up.
At first, it’s subtle.
“People are not available.”
“Refusal rates are higher than expected.”
“We’re seeing the same types of respondents again.”
By the time someone says, “I think we’re running out of samples,” it usually means you already are.
What Does “Running Out of Sample” Actually Mean? It does not mean you completed all interviews.
It means:
- The remaining people who fit your criteria are hard to find
- Or unwilling to participate
- Or simply do not exist in the numbers you assumed
In short, your eligible pool is shrinking faster than your targets.
A research team designs a study targeting urban youth aged 18–25 who are into the poultry business. The sample size is 800. The cities are large. Everyone feels confident.
Week one goes smoothly.
Week two slows down.
Week three, enumerators start saying things like:
“Most people left are older.”
“We are having language barriers
“People who qualify are refusing.”
“Respondents are saying the questionnaire is lengthy.”
What’s happening?
The true size of the eligible population was overestimated, and high-probability respondents were exhausted early. The “easy” sample is gone.
What to do?
- Check for replacement samples
- Revisit the sampling frame
- Review eligibility criteria
- Document everything (number of attempted interviews, refusals and reasons, ineligible cases, dates and locations, incomplete interviews, respondents that meet the criteria but requested to be interviewed later)
- Revisit respondents who were not home
- Assign the right enumerators to the right communities (people are more comfortable talking to you when you speak the language they best understand)
What not to do
- Interview friends and family who do not fit the criteria
- Reuse old respondents
- Fabricate data
- Skip consent procedures
Sampling Is Where Things Quietly Go Wrong
Sampling rarely collapses loudly. It collapses politely.
When respondents are difficult to find, substitutions happen. When quotas feel hard to achieve, everyone goes for what is easily available. And no one wants to be the person who slows things down by raising concerns.
For instance, a team plans to conduct 600 household interviews in two weeks. In reality, the villages are spread out, transport is limited, and interviews take longer because respondents want explanations. By day four, enumerators are behind schedule and rushing.
By the time analysis starts, the damage is already done.

- Interviews that are suspiciously fast
- Too many responses look very similar
- The same locations being used repeatedly
- Replacement rules being ignored
How to Protect Your Sample
- Explain sampling rules in plain language.
- Monitor progress daily, not weekly.
- Require approval for replacements.
- Say this clearly: bad sampling cannot be fixed later.
- Ensure enumerator allocation is strictly aligned with sample distribution.
- Base daily targets on pilot results, not guesses.
- Plan transport and logistics as carefully as the questionnaire.
A perfect analysis on a broken sample is still broken.
Respondents Are Busy, Tired, and Sometimes Suspicious
Respondents don’t wake up excited to answer surveys.
They have work. They have families. They have problems. And they’ve probably been surveyed before without seeing any benefit.
When people don’t trust the process, they either refuse or provide careless answers. Both hurt your data.
Why People Push Back
- Surveys feel long
- The purpose is unclear
- Fear of how information will be used
- No obvious benefit to participating
What Actually Helps
- Explain the study honestly and simply. No big promises.
- Keep interviews short and focused.
- Respect refusals. Forced interviews produce bad data.
- Use local language and local understanding.
- Make them understand that they can opt-out at any point
- Assure them anonymity and privacy
When people feel respected, they answer differently.
Quality Control Has to Happen While Fieldwork Is Still Alive
Checking data after fieldwork is like checking food after it’s spoiled.
By then, it’s too late.
Quality problems need to be caught while enumerators are still in the field and respondents can still be reached.

After fieldwork, always debrief with teams while memories are fresh, write down what actually happened, and update training and plans for next time.
